The street during the Sarajevo Film Festival

You Need to Visit Sarajevo During the Film Festival

Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina might just be my favourite city in Europe and there’s no better time to visit than during the Sarajevo International Film Festival. For the duration of the festival, there’s a buzz all around the city; tourists and locals fill the streets, spilling out from bars and restaurants. The city comes alive like no other time of year.

For eight days each year Sarajevo comes alive with the largest film festival in the Balkans. Founded during the siege of Sarajevo this festival stands as an important reminder of the spirit of the locals and the importance of culture even in the darkest times. Mark your calendar for the biggest event of the year in Sarajevo. It’s an experience like no other.

Missed the 2024 film festival? I’ll update the dates for 2025 once they’ve been announced. But you can plan for the middle of August.

Why it Started

The Sarajevo Film Festival was founded in 1995 during the siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War. During this time, the city was surrounded with the residents experiencing extreme hardship and strife. The film festival became an act of defiance and a statement of resilience despite the ongoing conflict. It was created with the aim of a space for artistic expression and international collaboration.

The festival is a reminder of the importance of culture even in the darkest times. Since it’s inception, the Sarajevo Film Festival has grown to become a major event. It attracts international and local celebrities and filmmakers. The festival is a celebration of the spirit of Sarajevo and the transformative power of film.

I highly recommend you to learn more about the Bosnian War which occurred very recently. One of the best ways to do so is to take a free walking tour of the city. Alternatively visit one of the Museums which are located within the city.

Why You Should Visit the Sarajevo Film Festival

The first time I visited Sarajevo was just a week after the film festival had ended. Although I missed the event, the remnants of it were everywhere—signs, flags, and posters adorned the city. Our free tour guide mentioned that it was the best time of year to visit.

The following year, I made it in time for the opening night of the festival. Opening night featured movies, red carpets, and street parties. The entire city buzzed with an energy that was absent during my previous visit.

Wandering the streets of Sarajevo is filled with beautiful architecture, this is one of the places you can catch a film.

Bars overflowed with people dancing in the streets. Live music, DJs, and impromptu street parties sprung up everywhere, and to top it off, there were even people handing out free beer. The atmosphere was incredible.

Throughout Sarajevo are various locations where films are being screened. I had hoped to see a film in the outdoor cinema but was unfortunately too slow buying tickets. Instead, I attended a movie screening for a film called Totem, which was originally in Spanish with Bosnian and English subtitles. As this was the premiere, the cinema was completely full and the director gave an interview before the film started.

Sarajevo is one of my favourite cities in Europe, and if you visit during the film festival, you’re in for a real treat.
