Munich’s Summer Charm
The first time I visited Munich was back in 2014 in December. It was cold, grey and it snowed. As someone who doesn’t get to see snow very often was an incredibly exciting experience. One of my favourite memories of my whole time in Munich was walking down the street with a friend rolling the snow into balls.
But this post isn’t about snow. It’s about Munich in Summer. The contrast between winter and summer couldn’t be starker. The next time I went to Munich in Summer I remember thinking “There’s SO much green.” There were flowers, sunshine and people outside everywhere. Munich comes alive in the summer and it’s the perfect time for swimming in the river.
Swim in the English Gardens
Take a dip in the refreshing waters of the English Garden’s rivers. Alternatively, join the locals floating down the river just below the Eisbach Wave. Exercise caution if swimming here. As it’s not officially allowed by the city and can be extremely dangerous, especially if you’re not a confident swimmer.

About The English Garden (Englischer Garten)
The English Gardens, located next to city centre, stretch over five kilometres and are one of the largest inner city parks in the world. The Gardens are ideal for all sorts of outdoor activities. If you have the time, I recommend checking out:
- Monopteros with a panoramic view over the gardens.
- The Japanese Tea House, and
- The Kleinhesseloher See, a lake where you can rent a boat or visit a beer garden.
The English Gardens are a year-round destination. With summer sunbathing and winter ice-skating, sledding and cross-country skiing. There’s often events on in the gardens. Check the Official Munich Tourism website for more information.

River Surfing in Munich
The famous river surfing in Munich is the kind of thing that defies belief. Before I knew about the river surfing, I was confused by the people walking through the city with surfboards. Turns out there’s quite the surfing culture in Munich with people surfing year-round. The most popular location is the Eisbach Wave while there’s also another quieter spot (Kleine Eisbachwelle) further down the same river. The second one is more beginner friendly. If you’re a surfer and want to give it a crack, try here first.

Swim Spots on The Isar River
An Alpine River in the City. Whenever I visit Munich, I’m always surprised at how clean the water in the Isar River is. As a result, on a summers day you will find the riverbanks filled with people as they sunbath, exercise and swim. The source of the Isar is in the Karwendel Mountain Range in Austria. Before it flows through the city, the Isar River is UV purified and disinfected, making Munich an excellent place for river swimming. The following eight locations are the best river swimming spots within the city and it’s outskirts.

1. The Flaucher – Flaucher Strand
The biggest and best river swimming location in Munich. Embrace Munich’s laid-back vibe at the clothing-optional Flaucher Strand, a popular destination for sun-seekers and swimmers alike. With numerous pools to choose from, it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely swim or a riverside barbecue.

2. Max-Joseph-Brücke
From the Max-Joseph Bridge, head to the stony beach for sunbathing and swimming. It’s another popular destination for locals and visitors alike and one of the closest of the swimming spots to the English Gardens.

3. Isarstrand
The closest river swimming location to the centre of Munich. Isarstrand offers a rocky beach where visitors can soak up the sun and enjoy a leisurely swim. Be prepared for crowds during peak times.
4. Weideninsel
Upstream from the Wittelsbacherbrücke, there’s concrete steps next to the river and several pools to swim in. This is my favourite river swimming location in Munich.
Tip: Check out the Crazy Ice Cream Maker a short walk from Weideninsel for a unique Curry-wurst flavoured ice cream, plus actual delicious options.

5. Isarstrand Brudermühlbrücke
Further downstream from Weideninsel, discover another stony beach perfect for swimming. Explore the area for many other beaches nearby and enjoy a memorable day by the river. Just exercise caution near the swift currents if you’re not a strong swimmer.
6. Großhesseloher Brücke
The furthest upstream from the city centre of all the Munich’s river swimming spots. The beaches next to the Großhesseloher Brücke are the perfect place to relax and escape the city. Plus it’s a short walk from the nearest S-Bahn station.

7. Isarwehr
Located on the edge of the English Gardens just downstream of the Isarwehr (Isar Weir). Access this spot with a walk through the gardens before arriving at the weir and riverbank. There’s also plenty more swimming options around in you continue downstream from here.

River Swimming Beyond the City
Venture beyond Munich’s city limits to discover plenty more excellent outdoor swimming locations.
1. Steinstrand Isarauen
Downstream and north of the city. Walk through the forest to arrive at a secluded location surrounded by trees. It’s rarely very busy and a popular spot of locals and fishermen. Unfortunately, the water is not very deep and the river quite wide. There are several nice stony beaches all along this section of the river so explore around to find the best place for you.

2. Isar-Kiesbank
Located just outside of Munich in the neighbouring town of Ismaning. Catch the S-Bahn to Ismaning and walk (or bus) to the river from the station. It’s an excellent spot for a more peaceful riverside experience, complete with swimming, sunbathing, and evening bonfires.
Lake Swimming Around Munich
River’s aren’t the only place for a swim in Munich. There are also several lakes around the city which offer swimming and other outdoor recreational activities. These are the best options around Munich
1. Langwieder Lake District
This sizable leisure spot features three lakes, a golf course & vast lawns for sunbathing. With no strong river currents, it’s a an ideal swimming spot for all ability levels. The district also offers visitors opportunities for scenic walks, volleyball courts, a playground for children, a small kiosk and public toilets. There’s even a diving centre here.
Note: This is a popular summer destination and can get very crowded. Get here early to secure the best spots. Get public transport to avoid having to battle to find a park.

2. The Dreiseenplatte
A collection of three lakes in Munich’s north. The lakes are the Feldmochinger See, Fasaneriesee and Lerchenauer See (See means lake in German). All three lakes are accessible using public transport and walking. Enjoy swimming, sunbathing and a host of outdoor activities in the picturesque locale. The lakes are all manufactured and were formerly gravel extraction pits.
Feldmochinger See is the largest of the three lakes and has space for up to a whopping 12,000 bathers! It has disabled access, a nudist site and an extensive area for barbecuing.

Escape the city at Percha Beach. A charming swimming spot to the southwest of Munich. It easily accessible using the S-Bahn. Relax on the long jetty, swim in the pristine waters and savour the natural beauty of this lakeside oasis. There’s plenty of nature around and a kiosk and restaurant for when you get hungry. So, pack a picnic for the ultimate day out.
